Below is information about the publishing-related services I offer as both an independent freelancer and a subcontractor for Indigo Editing & Publications. Because each project has unique needs, rates vary. To request information about a particular service, send me an e-mail.
Publication Consultation & Project Management
My job as a publication consultant is to help guide authors through the process of independent publishing. I help my clients avoid the common pitfalls of self-publishing, saving them from wasting time and money. I offer everything from basic consultation to full project management.
Editing at this level focuses on large-scale issues of content and organization. It is here that you and I discuss such things as plot development, narrative style, clarity of thesis, and organization of chapters. During a developmental edit, I provide in-depth analysis of the writing to help you revise and solidify your manuscript’s content.
Line Editing (Also Known As Copyediting)
Editing at this level focuses on language over content. During the copyediting process, I work word by word through a manuscript, correcting errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and word usage. I also work to conform the manuscript to the standards of style preferred by most publishers and agents. A line edit also includes suggestions for minor revisions in places where the manuscript is still a bit rough.
Editing at this level is your last line of defense. This is the final polish of your writing before it goes to print. It is basically a search of any last errors lingering in your writing.
Editorial Response Letter
This is a basic service for authors interested in receiving honest feedback about their writing. I will read your manuscript from beginning to end and write a brief response letter (4—6 pages) that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, offers broad advice for revision, and answers specific questions you have about big-picture issues.
Here I apply my knowledge of what publishers and agents look for to help you develop the perfect submission package for your manuscript. This service varies from author to author and manuscript to manuscript.
Book Design for Self-Published Authors
If you want to use one of the popular self-publishing services to print and promote your book, but you don’t want your book to look like all the rest, I can help. I can design a book for you that works within the production parameters of your chosen service yet is virtually indistinguishable from books printed by traditional publishers.
Custom Book Design for Authors and Publishers
Sometimes a book won’t fit any mold. The more elements you add—like graphics, callouts, footnotes, endnotes, and worksheets—the more complex the design becomes. I am happy to work with you to design a custom book from scratch that fulfills all your book’s needs. I will even work with your printer to make sure your book’s production runs as smoothly as possible.
Document Design for Businesses
I do more than just books! I have plenty of experience designing documents of all shapes and sizes. Brochures, business cards, company newsletters—I can design them all. With my help, you can have the best-dressed documents in town.
